Need to know: Top Gear to make comeback four years after Flintoff’s crash
Top Gear is reportedly returning to TV with brand new hosts after being shelved for four years following Freddie Flintoff’s near-fatal crash.
The beloved motoring show was rested in 2023 after the former cricket star suffered life-changing injuries in the 130mph crash at Dunsfold Park Aerodrome in Surrey. Flintoff was left with broken ribs and facial injuries when his open-top Morgan Super 3 flipped over during filming in December 2022.
The BBC announced they were resting the programme for the “foreseeable future” due to the “exceptional circumstances”. But now insiders reveal the BBC is working on a reboot with completely new presenters replacing Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris.
A source told The Sun: “BBC bosses are keen to revive Top Gear because they have never filled the space it left behind and so many viewers hanker after a motoring show.” They added that the show “is a brand in its own right and watched by millions around the globe.”
The BBC has reportedly started hunting for fresh faces for the series, which could return to screens next year. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May previously had the most successful run from 2002 to 2015 before moving to Amazon’s The Grand Tour.
Flintoff’s terrifying crash left him housebound for eight months, but he has since returned to public life and will front a new ITV documentary shot in Nepal. The 48-year-old opened up about the crash in a Disney+ documentary.
