Emmerdale’s Kelvin Fletcher reveals ‘bittersweet’ farm news after ‘sudden’ loss

Former Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher and wife Liz reflected on the “sudden and unexpected” passing during the final episode of Fletcher’s Family Farm’s latest series

Kelvin Fletcher ended the series with some “bittersweet” news for viewers of his hit farming show.

The ex-Emmerdale actor, his wife Liz and their four young children have been documenting their lives on their Peak District property on their hit show Fletchers’ Family Farm. The popular ITV show has aired three series already.

During the final episode of series four of Fletcher’s Family Farm, which airs on Sunday (April 12), the couple reflected on the past year – and the highs and lows they have faced. Kelvin said that winter on the Cheshire farm “has been a season of mixed fortune.”

He said in the voiceover: “We hit a great milestone with the first of our cattle being sent to produce organic meat. But any joy was overshadowed by the sudden and unexpected passing of Cherry due to pneumonia.”

Kelvin continued: “We’re learning to deal with the highs and lows of farming life, and today could be the start of the next chapter for our herd, as vet Hugo has arrived to give Ruby a pregnancy test.”

Earlier in the series, he discovered that Ruby had miscarried. The soap star continued: “So Crowther had three chances to get Ruby in calf before we separated them. As for Ruby, although she miscarried once, she’s produced a couple of cracking Lincoln reds – our award-winning bull calf, Ray, followed by our first-ever Elizabeth, who was born late summer.

“So, yeah, I mean, that miscarriage kind of puts you back. You lose two or three months, and suddenly you’re at the back end of summer, then, and it has a knock-on effect. “

When it came to the pregnancy scan, Kelvin was overjoyed to hear that Ruby was 11 weeks pregnant. Kelvin was thrilled, but admitted it was “bittersweet” following Cherry’s death.

He said: “Brilliant, Ruby. It’s good to get an idea of how her recovery is. She had a second calf in September, and three months later, she’s back in calf, so that’s a good sign.

“Crowther was obviously again doing a job, which is good. It’s bittersweet to be honest. You know, it is really good, but bittersweet. Obviously, we lost Cherry, so there should have been two cows.

“I’d like to think Cherry would have been two months ahead, and there would be two cows, instead of just one. But we just need to get another cow, don’t we? We need to replace the cherry. So I’m already on the lookout for some more cows and more cows who are already in calf.”
